Why pet supplement retention works differently
Pet supplements have 2 problems most products don't. The owner can't ask the pet how it feels, and results build over weeks. A joint, calming or gut supplement can take a while before an owner sees a change, and most cancels happen before they do. The first month after the first order decides most of the repeat revenue.
The second difference is trust. Owners are buying something their pet will swallow every day, often for an older or unwell animal. They trust their vet more than any brand, so emails that sound like hype push them away.
The third is dose. How long a tub lasts depends on the pet's weight, so one reorder timer for every customer sends reminders too early to some and too late to others.
This page covers supplement brands only. For pet food, accessories and the wider pet category, read our retention guide for pet brands.
Subscriptions and reorder timing by dose
Set reorder timing from days of supply: the tub size divided by the daily dose for the pet's weight band. Send the reminder about 7 to 10 days before it runs out. For subscribers, the same number sets the default frequency.
| What we collect | What it changes | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Pet type and weight band | Daily dose, so the reorder date and subscription frequency | Klaviyo profile property from the pop-up, quiz or post-purchase form |
| Number of pets on the supplement | Quantity per order and how often it ships | Klaviyo property, plus the default frequency offered in Loop |
| Life stage (young, adult, senior) | Which supplement to suggest next | Klaviyo property with a date |
| Main concern (joints, calm, gut, skin) | Which education emails and products each owner sees | Klaviyo property from the quiz |
| Start date | The results check-ins at week 2 and month 1 | First order date in Klaviyo |
When a subscription ships faster than the pet uses it, "I have enough" becomes the cancel reason. Across the subscription brands we run on Loop, having enough or too much product is the most common cancel reason, at about 23% of cancel attempts. A skip or a slower frequency fixes that better than a discount.
The first 30 days: a results timeline
Tell owners what to watch for and when, in the brand's own words, from the day the order ships. An owner who knows what "working" looks like at day 14 is less likely to cancel at day 20.
- Day 0 to 2: how to give it, how to mix it into food, and a start-slow option for pets with a sensitive stomach, if your directions allow one.
- Week 2: a check-in on what owners usually notice first, with an easy route to support if the pet won't take it.
- Month 1: a results check and a review or photo ask, then the subscription offer for one-time buyers.
- A kind goodbye: senior-pet supplements have a cancel reason no other niche has: the pet has died. Those owners get one short, kind email, any upcoming order is cancelled without asking twice, and they leave every winback and promo flow.
Vet trust in pet supplement emails
Vet trust is earned with facts, not adjectives. When a vet works with the brand, we name them and quote what they actually said. When a pet's health is in question, especially a senior pet or one on medication, the email says "ask your vet". Reviews are quoted as written, never improved.
Compliance-safe claims for pet supplements
We write every claim from your label, your product page and your evidence, quoted as written. The lines we keep:
- Support, not treatment. "Supports joint mobility" describes a supplement. "Treats arthritis" or "cures anxiety" is a disease claim, and in the US and the UK a product making disease claims can be regulated as a veterinary drug or medicine.
- No cure words. "Cure", "heal", "reverse" and "prevent" stay out of the copy unless your product is licensed for it.
- Studies stay studies. A trial is cited as a study, never as a promise for every pet.
- No made-up timelines. "Most owners notice a change within" only appears if your evidence or reviews support it.
Cancel flows and failed payments on Loop
We are a Loop Platinum Partner and build cancel flows on the real reasons owners give. "Enough product" gets a skip or a slower frequency. "My pet won't take it" gets a swap to another flavour or format and tips on introducing it slowly. "Too expensive" gets one clear offer or a longer gap between orders. Failed payments get a short card-update sequence by email and SMS. Read more in our guides to subscription cancel flows and failed payment recovery.
EK proof for pet brands
- KittySpout (cat water fountains and filter subscriptions on Loop): 46% of revenue is attributed to Klaviyo, and the cancel flow save rate went from 6% to 43% by October 2026. Read the KittySpout case study.
- PetsVet Supply (dog travel gear): email grew from under 5% to 40.2% of store revenue, comparing the same 3 months a year apart, while the store grew 31%. Read the PetsVet Supply case study.
- A senior-dog supplement brand on Loop, with us since October 2026. The flows above are the ones we built for it first. It is too new for published results.
Other agencies that come up for pet supplements include Get Better, Underground Ecom and Magnet Monster. Ask each of them the questions below.
What to ask a pet supplement email agency
- Which pet brands do you run today, and on which subscription app? Loop, Recharge and others send different data to Klaviyo.
- How do you time reorders when the dose depends on weight? The answer should use days of supply, not one timer for everyone.
- What happens in the first 30 days after the first order? If there is no results timeline, expect early cancels.
- Who checks the health claims? Ask how they keep supplement copy away from drug claims.
- What is your cancel flow save rate today? Ask for a before and after on a named brand.
- How fast is the first flow live? Ours is live within 72 hours of access.
