Why haircare retention works differently
Most consumables prove themselves on first use. Haircare, and hair loss products most of all, don't. Hair grows slowly, so a serum, oil or treatment needs weeks of steady use before anyone sees a change in the mirror. The customer pays on day 1 and sees the payoff around day 60 to 90, if they are still using it.
That gap is where haircare brands lose people. A customer who skips a week, sees nothing by week 4 and stops will blame the product, even when the real reason was the routine. When we audited Dense, we found the post-purchase sequence pushed upsells before trust was earned, and there was no plan for the 60-day window where most subscribers quietly disappear.
The second difference is scepticism. Hair loss customers have usually spent real money on products that did nothing. Batana oil buyers have seen counterfeits and diluted formulas. Every email has to answer "why would this one be different?" before it asks for anything.
The 90-day results window
We plan haircare flows around 3 stages, each with one job.
Days 0 to 14: get the routine right. How to apply it, how much, how often, and what the first 2 weeks feel like. If the product is applied with a tool (a dropper, a scalp massager, a microneedle device), the first email shows exactly how.
Days 15 to 60: keep them going when nothing has changed yet. This is the drop-off zone. The emails explain what is happening under the scalp, set honest timelines, and ask for a day 1 photo so the customer has something to compare against. Shedding, slow change and "is it working?" get answered before they become a cancel reason.
Days 60 to 90: show the result and ask for the next step. A photo comparison prompt, a review ask, and the reorder or subscription. At this point the customer has a reason to stay, so this is where routine bundles and subscriptions land best.
For subscribers, the first renewal often comes before the results do. The cancel flow has to know that. "Not seeing results yet" gets a realistic timeline and a skip, not a discount.
Routine bundles and the second product
Haircare is bought as a routine: shampoo, conditioner, a treatment, sometimes a tool. The second order is often a second product, and the bundle is what keeps the routine whole.
- Treatment first, then the wash. Customers who start on a serum or oil are shown the shampoo and conditioner that suit it.
- Bundles by concern. Thinning, dryness, breakage or scalp health, matched to what the customer told you in a quiz or pop-up.
- Tool refills. Devices and applicators with replaceable parts get their own replacement reminder.
- 3-month packs. Because results take about 90 days, a 3-month supply matches the time it takes to see them. It also removes 2 reorder decisions from the drop-off zone.
Claims in haircare emails
Hair loss copy sits on a regulatory line. We write every claim from your product page, your label and your ingredient research:
- Cosmetic vs drug. In the US, a product that claims to regrow hair or treat hair loss is a drug (minoxidil is the common example). A cosmetic can claim thicker-looking, fuller-looking or stronger hair.
- Studies. Ingredient research is cited as a study, not as a promise to the reader. Dense reviewed all campaign copy against its ingredient science for accuracy.
- Before and after. Only real customer photos and reviews, quoted as written.
- Banned words. "Cure", "guaranteed regrowth" and "miracle" stay out unless the product is sold as a treatment and can back it.
Klaviyo flows that work for haircare brands
| Flow | Trigger | What it does in haircare |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome series | Pop-up or hair quiz | Asks concern, hair type and what they have tried, then answers "why is this different?" |
| Days 0-14 onboarding | Order delivered | How to apply, how often, what week 1 and 2 feel like |
| Days 15-60 adherence | Order date | Honest timelines, shedding questions, day 1 photo prompt |
| Day 60-90 result check | Order date | Photo comparison, review ask, then the reorder or subscription |
| Replenishment | Order date plus days of supply | Fires 7 to 10 days before the bottle or jar runs out |
| Routine bundle | Second order or day 30 | Shampoo, conditioner or tool that fits the treatment |
| Subscription and failed payment | Loop, Appstle or Checkout Champ events | Upcoming order, card update and frequency changes |
| Cancel and winback | Cancellation | "Not seeing results yet" gets a timeline and a skip, "too much product" gets a slower frequency |

What to ask a haircare email agency
- What do your emails do between day 15 and day 60? If the answer is "campaigns", the drop-off zone is unmanaged.
- Which haircare or hair loss brands have you run, with numbers? Ask for case studies you can read.
- How do you handle regrowth claims? They should know where cosmetic copy ends and drug claims begin.
- What happens when a subscriber says "not seeing results yet"? A discount is the wrong first answer.
- Do you sell 3-month packs or bundles in the flows? They should match the results window.
- How fast is the first flow live? Ours is live in 72 hours.
