Who this is for
DTC brands that sell subscriptions through Checkout Champ and use Klaviyo for email and SMS. Most of them came to Checkout Champ for its funnels, upsells and payment gateway choice. Then they found that Klaviyo only knows about orders.
If any of these sound familiar, this page is for you:
- Your Klaviyo shows first orders and very few renewals.
- Nobody gets an email when a rebill declines.
- Cancelled subscribers keep getting "your next box" campaigns.
- You moved off Shopify with Recharge or Loop, and your subscription flows went quiet.
What Checkout Champ sends to Klaviyo, and what it misses

Checkout Champ's native Klaviyo plugin sends order and checkout events. The subscription lifecycle lives in Checkout Champ's postbacks, which the plugin does not use.
| What happens in Checkout Champ | Native Klaviyo plugin | Available as a postback trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Customer starts checkout | Started Checkout | n/a |
| First order | Placed Order, Ordered Product | Subscription Started |
| Successful rebill | Placed Order, only if the rebill toggle is on and routed | Recurring Order |
| Upcoming charge | Not sent | Pre-Billing |
| Rebill declined | Not sent | Rebill Decline |
| Final failure after recycle billing | Not sent | Recycle Failed |
| Subscription cancelled | Not sent when a customer cancels. The plugin's Cancelled Order event fires when an order is cancelled in the CRM, not when a customer cancels their subscription | Cancel |
| Subscription paused | Not sent | Pause |
| Subscription restarted | Subscription Restarted | Reactivate |
| Subscription skipped | Not sent | No trigger exists |
The full breakdown, including the rebill toggle most accounts have switched off, is in our Checkout Champ Klaviyo integration guide.
What we build

1. The subscription event bridge. We connect Checkout Champ's postbacks to Klaviyo, so 8 subscription events land on the right profile: Subscription Started, Pre-Billing, Recurring Order, Rebill Decline, Recycle Failed, Cancel, Pause and Reactivate. We drop duplicates from Checkout Champ's retries, add the fields the postback leaves out (next bill date) and filter out other brands' campaigns in shared accounts. How it works is explained in subscription events in Klaviyo.
2. 8 lifecycle flows.
| Flow | Trigger |
|---|---|
| Subscriber onboarding | Subscription Started |
| Upcoming payment reminder | Pre-Billing or next bill date |
| Failed payment | Rebill Decline, then Recycle Failed |
| Cancel save and winback | Cancel |
| Paused subscriber | Pause |
| Order reminder for one-time buyers | Placed Order (first order) |
| Cross-sell to subscribers | Subscription Started, later in the cycle |
| Upgrade to subscription | Repeat one-time buyers |
3. One-tap portal buttons. Emails carry buttons that open the right page in the customer's Checkout Champ portal: update card, resume, reactivate and pause. The customer lands on the action they need without hunting through the portal. We keep these out of pre-renewal emails, since the portal is also where people cancel.
4. Autoresponders switched off. Checkout Champ has its own emails for cancellation, pause, pre-billing and declined rebills. We switch them off before the Klaviyo flows go live so nobody gets 2 emails for 1 event.
Proof
HolySwish, an oral care brand, moved its subscriptions off Loop to Checkout Champ in September 2026. In October we set up the event bridge and the subscription flows: onboarding, failed payment, cancelled, paused, upcoming payment, order reminder and cross-sell. Subscription events were flowing into Klaviyo within days.

How an engagement works

- Free Checkout Champ subscription check. A 20-minute call. We look at what your Checkout Champ sends to Klaviyo, whether rebills reach it, which subscription emails are missing and whether Checkout Champ autoresponders double-send.
- Fixed-price setup. The event bridge, the 8 flows, the portal buttons and the autoresponder switch-off. The Checkout Champ setup is a fixed price, quoted after the free check.
- Monthly retainer. Campaigns, testing and ongoing flow work. Retainers start from $5,000 a month, with a 3-month minimum and 4 weeks notice.
Onboarding takes 1 week, and the first flow is live within 72 hours of access. We need staff access to Checkout Champ (to set up postbacks and check autoresponders) and to Klaviyo.
